On October 30, 2010, there will be Rally to Restore Sanity in Washington D.C. Even though it was started by funny man, Jon Stewart – possibly as a joke – I think it’s a great idea and it’s clearly resonating with people who have not found themselves represented these days. (over 200,000 have RSVPed on Facebook)
Something scary is happening to our country. Seriously we are off-balance these days. Not only have once reasonable people gotten sucked into the rabble rousing, fear-mongering, and us-versus-them mindset of our times but people who weren’t reasonable to begin with are feeding off this atmosphere and now see enemies behind every difference of opinion. The most troubling development is that the fringes are unraveling and their solutions are getting more and more wacko every day.
So will the rally work? My hope is that it will be a gathering of reasonable people from both the left and right who want to talk sanely about the real issues we are facing and not allow the crazy fervor of extremists to set the agenda of our times. It may be too much to hope for of course but at least it is a forum to try.
As Jon Stewart says: Take it down a notch, America. I think I would have to agree.
